Just what is Cinco de Mayo and why is it celebrated? It's held on May 5 to commemorate the Mexican army of 4,000 men defeating the French with 8,000 men at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. It is not, as some refer to it, Mexico's Independence Day. It did give the Mexican army and the people of Mexico hope of escaping French occupation and with such an unlikely victory, anyone could use a drink!

Here in the United States, it represents a day to recognize Mexican American heritage much like Chinese New Year and St. Patrick's Day are held to celebrate Chinese and Irish heritages. So, here are a few ideas to get your party started. Happy Cinco de Mayo!
