Stationers and invitation companies price invitations in one of two ways--a la carte or as an ensemble. A la carte means that each item is priced separately. Therefore, you may end up spending more. Ensembles usually include the main components for one price. That's right, your invite, outer envelope and reply set for one price. However, there is a catch--any additional inserts are charged separately.
During your consultation, or when visiting a store, don't be afraid to ask how the invitations you're interested in are priced. I always tell my brides to be sure you get the most bang for your buck! If that means doing some price comparisons, that's what you should do.
The exception to this rule is a custom invite. If you are thinking about a custom invitation, remember that you are asking for a one-of-a-kind, unique invitation and you will be asking for atypical designs. Therefore, you will be quoted an atypical price. Custom invites are always more expensive because of the level of complexity in design, papers selected and/or printing. If an itemized quote is possible, ask for one or at least ask the designer or stationer to go over those things with you so you will walk away knowing where your money is going.
Recap: Know how the invitations you like are priced--ensemble or a la carte.
Tip: Compare prices before you make your final purchase.
