Invitation Time Lines

Ordering your invitation is a bit tricky. Here's our suggestion:

  1. Online orders - Check to see if there is a production time frame given for the invitation you have chosen. Some retailers will have a 5-7 day production time. These are relatively simple to order and have a quick turnaround. We suggest ordering 1 month in advance.
  2. Custom orders - These orders will be made to your specifications. You will want to make sure that you give the designer time to do their absolute best and build in time for changes. We advise that you place your custom order 3-4 months in advance of your mailing date.

In each case, remember to order a few more than you will actually need. These may come in handy for any last minute additions to your guest list. Many retailers will charge you for a new order if you need to add invitations. Ask your stationer if this is their policy. You would hate to pay $500 for a new order when you could have paid a few dollars more from the start.

You may also want to order a few extra envelopes if you plan on hand addressing or hiring a calligrapher. Mistakes do happen and you don't need any delays when you're on a time budget.

Save time by:

  • paying extra for assembly
  • splurging on guest addressing or calligraphy
  • having your designer purchase your stamps (if an option)

Wedding planning should be fun! Your stationer or designer can assist you with so many things, if you can work it into your budget. Ask about the options available for the invitation ensemble that you choose. You may be surprised to find out that your invitations could be mailed for you--one less thing you have to do!

When to Mail

You should mail your invitations 6-8 weeks before your wedding. If quite a few of your guests are from out of town, you should be courteous enough to allow them time to make travel arrangements. In this case 8 weeks should be your goal. Destination weddings should be on a 12 month timeline. Travel arrangements for these weddings are more complex. We also suggest sending a save the date or engagement announcement to inform your guests as early as possible of your intended date.
